Does CBD work for Anxiety in Dogs?

Is CBD a Good Choice for Dogs with Anxiety?

Many of us have seen the toll that anxiety can take on us. Times of stress and anxiousness have become normal occurrences for many with today's ever changing world. Our pets are no different. They pick up on our emotions, and, as a result of other contributing factors, anxiety is a common issue in dogs. Unfortunately, one that can affect their behavior and quality of life.

As someone who personally has a dog going through a major medical crisis (and needs to be kept calm under all circumstances) I wanted to research the potential benefits of CBD versus pharmaceutical tranquilizers. I am a big believer in natural remedies for myself and have found that our dogs can also benefit from this practice. That being said, CBD has emerged as a "wonder child", a potential natural remedy for managing anxiety in dogs. But...does it really work?

Understanding Anxiety in Dogs

- Dogs can experience anxiety due to various reasons, including separation, loud noises, or trauma.

- Symptoms of anxiety in dogs include restlessness, excessive barking, destructive behavior, and aggression.

How CBD Works for Anxiety

- CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system in the body, which plays a role in regulating mood and stress responses.

- CBD is believed to help alleviate anxiety by affecting serotonin receptors in the brain, which regulate mood and emotions.

Evidence Supporting CBD for Dog Anxiety

- Anecdotal evidence from dog owners suggests that CBD can help calm anxious dogs.

- A study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association found that CBD reduced anxiety in dogs with noise phobias.

Factors to Consider

- Dosage: The appropriate dosage of CBD for dogs with anxiety may vary based on factors such as weight and severity of symptoms.

- Quality of CBD: It's essential to choose high-quality CBD products specifically formulated for pets to ensure safety and effectiveness.

- Interaction with other medications: CBD may interact with certain medications, so it's important to consult with a veterinarian before starting CBD treatment.

Potential Side Effects

- While CBD is generally considered safe for dogs, some dogs may experience side effects such as drowsiness, dry mouth, or diarrhea.

- It's important to monitor your dog closely for any adverse reactions and adjust the dosage if needed.

So while the jury isn't completely in, CBD does show promise as a natural remedy for managing anxiety in dogs for many pet parents (myself included). Always consult with a veterinarian and make sure and use high-quality CBD products specifically formulated for pets.
